Assessing the time-dependent impact of performance status on outcomes after liver transplantation
Hepatology Jan 30, 2020
Wallace D, Cowling T, PcPhail MJ, et al. - Using national data from the UK and Ireland, researchers sought to evaluate the influence of performance status (PS) on mortality separately for HCC and non-HCC recipients. They evaluated pre-LT PS utilizing the 5-point modified Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group scale and used Cox-regression methods to measure hazard ratios (HR) that contrasted the posttransplantation mortality in different epochs of follow-up (0 to 90 days and 90 days to 1-year) and in different eras of transplantation (1995-2005 and 2006-2016). For non-HCC patients with poorer PS, the reduction for survival was found in the first 90 days after transplantation, with no major effect between 90 days and 1 year. The effect of pretransplant PS of the recipient on mortality is limited to the first 3 months after liver transplant. Mortality has improved over time for both HCC and non-HCC recipients and across the entire range of PS.
