Assessing the impact of acute respiratory illnesses on the risk of subsequent respiratory illness
The Journal of Infectious Diseases Jun 17, 2021
Howard LM, Liu Y, Zhu Y, et al. - Researchers examined the link between symptomatic acute respiratory illness (ARI) and subsequent ARI among young children. They used a prospective cohort of Peruvian children <3 years, in whom, the influence of index ARI on subsequent ARI risk was assessed. Index ARI were matched with ≤3 asymptomatic observations and followed over 28 days. Findings revealed that short-term protection against subsequent ARI was not conferred by ARIs in these children. To gain knowledge of drivers of recurrent ARI in young children, additional longitudinal studies are required.
