Assessing eligibility for lung cancer screening among women undergoing screening mammography: Cross-sectional survey results from the National Health Interview Survey
Journal of the American College of Radiology Oct 11, 2019
López DB, Flores EJ, Miles RC, et al. - Researchers used nationally representative cross-sectional survey data to estimate the proportion of women eligible for lung cancer screening (LCS) and tobacco cessation counseling among women (between the ages of 55 and 74 years) who reported mammography use in the past 2 years and had no history of lung or breast cancer. Findings revealed that undergoing LCS was reported by 7.9% of LCS-eligible women who underwent screening mammography. Overall, the receipt of mammography screening but not LCS was reported in the majority of LCS-eligible women. More likely white, younger, and non-college-educated women with lower household incomes were eligible for undergoing LCS, as revealed in multivariable analyses. Overall, among patients already receiving imaging-based screening services, mammography encounters may serve prime opportunities to increase LCS participation.
