Aspirin use in central retinal arterial occlusion to prevent ischaemic stroke: A retrospective cohort study in Taiwan
BMJ Open Mar 05, 2019
Kang EYC, et al. – Via analysis of the National Health Insurance Research Database (1998-2013), researchers assessed the effectiveness of aspirin use for preventing ischemic stroke following central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) in this retrospective cohort study. They identified 9,437 patients with newly diagnosed CRAO. Among 3,778 patients with newly diagnosed CRAO, use of aspirin after a CRAO did not show any benefit in mitigating ischemic stroke risk. They noted that the risk of ischemic stroke was increased after CRAO—particularly during the first week. Risk factors for ischemic stroke after CRAO included male sex and age.
