Aspirin use for venous thromboembolism prevention is safe and effective in overweight and obese patients undergoing revision total hip and knee arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty Dec 17, 2020
Tang A, Sicat CS, Singh V, et al. - With no current universal standard of care for venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis, this study was undertaken to investigate if aspirin prescribed (ASA) is safe and effective in obese patients undergoing revision total hip arthroplasty (RTHA)/revision total knee arthroplasty (RTKA). Researchers conducted a retrospective review including a total of 1,578 consecutive RTHA/RTKA cases (751 RTHA and 827 RTKA) to identify patients prescribed 325mg or 81mg ASA. They collected 90-day postoperative VTE rates, bleeding, wound complications, deep infections, and mortality. The data exhibited that for VTE prevention, ASA was found to be safe and effective in obese patients with similar complication rates to nonobese patients undergoing RTHA/RTKA.
