Asleep blood pressure: Significant prognostic marker of vascular risk and therapeutic target for prevention

Hermida RC, et al. - In this prospective analysis of 18,078 individuals with baseline ambulatory blood pressure (BP) ranging from normotension to hypertension, researchers determined if cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk reduction is most related to progressive decrease of either office or ambulatory awake or asleep BP mean. They performed median 5.1-year follow-up. They found that, for CVD events, the most significant BP-derived risk factor was asleep systolic blood pressure (SBP). Moreover, they reported significantly lower risk for CVD morbidity and mortality in relation to treatment-induced decrease of asleep, but not awake, SBP.
