Arthroscopic isolated capsular release for shoulder contracture after brachial plexus birth palsy: Clinical outcomes in a prospective cohort of 28 children with 2 years' follow-up

Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Apr 05, 2018

Ruyer J, et al. - Researchers aimed to assess the improvements in the external rotation following isolated arthroscopic capsular release in children with shoulder contracture due to brachial plexus birth palsy. All children older than 2 years with a range of active external rotation limited to 30° or less and/or active anterior elevation (AE) limited to 90° or less secondary to brachial plexus palsy were included in this study. For children with shoulder contracture secondary to the brachial plexus palsy, external rotation and functional scores were improved with the subscapularis-sparing isolated capsular release without any loss of active internal rotation but no improvement in AE. In the aggregate Mallet score, the mean improvement was 3.9 points.
