Arthrodesis vs arthroplasty in thumb carpometacarpal osteoarthritis: Impact on maximal voluntary force, endurance, and accuracy of pinch
The Journal of Hand Surgery May 27, 2021
Piacenza A, Vittonetto D, Rossello MI, et al. - The present study was conducted to explore differences in pinch strength recovery among patients with first carpometacarpal joint osteoarthritis treated with either arthrodesis or suspension arthroplasty. Researchers included a total of 37 individuals who had undergone arthrodesis or suspension arthroplasty for carpometacarpal osteoarthritis. They further assessed the force exerted during maximal voluntary contraction in a pinch task. It was shown that arthrodesis is correlated with greater pinch strength. As per the findings, arthroplasty is correlated with better pinch precision.
