Arterial stiffness and blood pressure in patients newly diagnosed with Grave disease compared with euthyroid controls
European Thyroid Journal Feb 20, 2020
Grove-Laugesen D, Malmstroem S, Ebbehoj E, et al. - Researchers undertook this cross-sectional analysis, to determine if well-established cardiovascular risk factors such as arterial stiffness in terms of pulse wave velocity (PWV) and blood pressure vary in Grave disease (GD) and controls. This analysis included 55 hyperthyroid patients having newly diagnosed GD and 55 euthyroid, population-based controls matched for age, gender, and menopausal status. Measurements of PWV and blood pressure were obtained in office (SphygmoCor Xcel) and 24-h ambulatory settings (Arteriograph). Although the blood pressure was comparable, a link of GD with a higher 24-h PWV, that was not identified in the office setting, was evident. In GD, higher pulse pressure was detected, whereas there was no difference in mean arterial pressure between the groups.
