Are surgeons reluctant to accurately report intraoperative adverse events? A prospective study of 1,989 patients
Surgery Jun 28, 2018
Peponis T, et al. - The true incidence of intraoperative adverse events (iAEs) was determined via analyzing all patients undergoing abdominal surgery at an academic institution between January and July 2016. Researchers included 1,989 operations and identified surgeons to be willing to report intraoperative adverse events. Surgeons, with a response rate of 71.9%, reported intraoperative adverse events in 107 operations (7.5%). Intraoperative adverse events in 417 operations (21.0%) were noted via reviewing operative report. They observed that surgeons reported these events either not systematically or with significant underreporting, especially if these were of lower severity. This seemed to be related to the absence of a clear intraoperative adverse event definition or their personal interpretation of their clinical significance.
