Are serious falls associated with subsequent fragility fractures among veterans living with HIV?
Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes Sep 21, 2021
Womack JA, Murphy TE, Ramsey C, et al. - Findings demonstrated that serious falls within the past year were strongly related to fragility fractures in persons living with HIV (PWH) receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART)—largely a middle-aged population—much as they are in older adults in the general population.
A total of 26,373 PWH (50+ years of age) and on ART were analyzed in the Veterans Aging Cohort Study.
Serious falls were defined as those falls significant enough to lead to a visit to a health care provider.
Post-adjustment, an elevated risk of fragility fracture [odds ratio (OR) 2.10] was noted in relation to serious falls in the previous year.
The only ART risk factor was use of integrase inhibitors (OR 1.17).
Diagnosis of alcohol use disorder (OR 1.49) and having a prescription for an opioid in the previous 6 months (OR 1.40) were found to be other risk factors.
