Are self-reported gastrointestinal symptoms among older adults associated with increased intestinal permeability and psychological distress?
BMC Geriatrics Apr 08, 2018
Ganda Mall JP, et al. - Researchers studied the link between self-reported gut health, intestinal permeability and psychological distress among older adults with gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, older adults representing the general elderly population in Sweden and senior orienteering athletes as a potential model of healthy ageing. Increased plasma levels of zonulin were seen in older adults with GI symptoms, which might reflect an augmented intestinal permeability. Compared with the other two groups, this group suffered from higher psychological distress. Further corroboration for this link was obtained using a Principal Component Analysis plot, which illustrated a link between GI symptoms, psychological distress and intestinal permeability.
