Are rhinoviruses implicated in the pathogenesis of sinusitis and chronic rhinosinusitis exacerbations? A comprehensive review
International Forum of Allergy & Rhinology Nov 08, 2019
Basharat U, et al. - Since rhinovirus (RV) infections are the most common cause of viral upper respiratory infections (URIs) and are self-limiting in most people, however, in others, viral URIs can progress to bacterial sinusitis and induce chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) exacerbations, researchers ascertained if RV was occurring more frequently in patients with upper airway inflammation. The initial search yielded 2,395 unique abstracts, of which 614 were chosen for full-text review, including 147 in the final review. According to this comprehensive review, RV infections are common in people with CRS and cause inflammatory reactions that can lead to exacerbations of CRS and disease progression. In order to develop new strategies for RV-induced CRS, further studies of RV species and host-virome response are needed.
