Are rhinoviruses implicated in the pathogenesis of sinusitis and chronic rhinosinusitis exacerbations? A comprehensive review
International Forum of Allergy & Rhinology Aug 28, 2019
Basharat U, et al. - This systematic review was performed by researchers to determine the incidence between rhinovirus (RV) and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), to study modifications that happen after experimental RV inoculation, to investigate the pathophysiological processes by which RV induces sinonasal inflammation and to analyze the therapy alternatives available for RV-associated sinusitis. Investigators found that the prevalence of RV infections is increased in those with CRS, humans challenged in vivo with RV secrete local inflammatory mediators with radiographic mucosal thickening, RV species RV-A and RV-C challenges in vitro to sinonasal epithelia produce robust cytokine responses and differential gene changes, and no current therapies have generated consistent and significant disease resolution. Findings suggested that RV infections are common in people with CRS and can lead to inflammatory reactions that can lead to exacerbations of CRS and disease progression. In order to develop new strategies for RV-induced CRS, further studies on RV species and the host-virome response are needed.
