Are computer-based treatment programs effective at reducing symptoms of substance misuse and mental health difficulties within adults? A systematic review

Journal of Dual Diagnosis Sep 07, 2019

Dugdale S, et al. - Via performing a systematic review, researchers examined the computer-based interventions for their efficacy at improving substance misuse and mental health outcomes. Eligibility criteria were met by 33 papers, which reported on a computer-based intervention designed to treat substance misuse and mental health in adults. Improvement in substance misuse and mental health outcomes was generally reported within groups and when compared against waitlist control and psychoeducation in correlation with the implementation of computer-based interventions. Dual diagnosis outcomes were effectively improved in correlation with computer-based interventions, and improvements to mental health outcomes specifically were maintained for up to 9 months. However, there appeared a higher efficacy of the combined effect of computer-based interventions and therapist support than the effects of computer-based interventions alone.
