Are chronic cough and laryngopharyngeal reflux more common in obstructive sleep apnea patients?
The Laryngoscope Apr 25, 2019
Gouveia CJ, et al. - In this prospective cohort study, to evaluate a significant difference in the prevalence and severity of chronic cough symptoms in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) cases vs non-OSA candidates, researchers examined 52 individuals. They observed a significant difference in mean Leicester Cough Questionnaire score (129.9 vs 120.0, respectively) indicating worse cough symptoms among subjects with OSA. They also recorded a mean Reflux Symptom Index score (3.2 vs 11.2, respectively), suggesting worse upper-airway reflux symptoms among OSA cases. They further implied a relationship between the severity of these quality-of-life measures and the severity of the AHI.
