Application of an 8% capsaicin patch normalizes epidermal TRPV1 expression but not the decreased intraepidermal nerve fiber density in patients with brachioradial pruritus

Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology Feb 15, 2018

Pereira MP, et al. - An analysis was conducted of the effect of topical capsaicin on keratinocyte expression of TRP channels and on the intraepidermal nerve fiber density (IENFD) in individuals suffering from brachioradial pruritus. It was noted that the normalization of the decreased TRPV1 expression could account for the effectiveness of topical capsaicin, which did not reconstitute the reduced IENFD. This, in turn, indicated that epidermal TRPV1 possibly played a role in the maintenance of brachioradial pruritus.
