Application of an 8% capsaicin patch normalizes epidermal TRPV1 expression but not the decreased intraepidermal nerve fibre density in patients with brachioradial pruritus
Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology May 25, 2018
Pereira MP, et al. - Experts probed the impact of optical capsaicin on keratinocyte expression of TRP channels and on the intraepidermal nerve fibre density (IENFD) in patients with brachioradial pruritus (BRP). A significant decrease in itch and paresthetic symptoms was seen with the treatment with the capsaicin patch. Findings suggested that the efficacy of topical capsaicin attributed to the normalization of the decreased TRPV1 expression. Topical capsaicin did not reconstitute the reduced IENFD in lesional epidermis. This finding argued for a role of epidermal TRPV1 in the maintenance of BRP.
