Apolipoprotein E genotype modifies the association between cardiac output and cognition in older adults
Journal of the American Heart Association Aug 05, 2019
Bown CW, Liu D, Osborn KE, et al. - Among participants of Vanderbilt Memory & Aging Project, researchers determined the impact of apolipoprotein E (APOE)-ε4 carrier status on the cross-sectional link between cardiac output and cognition. The participants (n = 306, 73 ± 7 years, 42% female) were free of clinical stroke and dementia. Echocardiography was performed to determine cardiac output (L/min). A comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation was also carried out. APOE genotype and ε4 carrier status were determined via venous blood draw. The possible modification of the aforementioned cross-sectional link by APOE-ε4 carrier status was observed in this study such that carriers of the ε4 allele showed poorer neuropsychological performances in correlation with lower cardiac output. The significant implications of APOE-ε4 carrier status for links between vascular and brain health in aging adults were further supported.
