Apolipoprotein E gene polymorphism and the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes

BMC Cardiovascular Disorders Sep 23, 2019

Liu S, et al. - Researchers undertook a cross-sectional analysis involving 924 individuals to examine the link between apolipoprotein E gene (APOE) polymorphisms and type 2 diabetes (T2D) with or without cardiovascular disease (CVD), using univariable and multivariable logistic analysis. Participants included 211 controls (CVD-T2D-), 247 T2D patients with CVD (CVD-T2D+), 232 CVD patients without T2D (CVD + T2D-) and 234 T2D patients with CVD (CVD + T2D+). These individuals were genotyped using chip platform. In T2D patients with CVD, an increased frequency of E3/E4 was detected. Compared with controls, a higher ε4 (Epsilon 4) allele was found in CVD patients without T2D and T2D patients with CVD. Increased risk of CVD and T2D was observed in correlation with the presence of ε4 allele. Higher level of lipid profiles was exhibited by the carriers of ε4 allele.
