Aorta calcification increases the risk of anastomotic leakage after gastrectomy in gastric cancer patients
Cancer Management and Research May 15, 2021
Tao W, Cheng YX, Zou YY, et al. - Researchers assessed if vascular calcification confers risk for anastomotic leakage post-gastrectomy in gastric cancer patients. They used the database of a single clinical center from January 2013 to January 2019, and selected patients with confirmed gastric cancer. This study involved 856 patients; 818 patients had no anastomotic leakage, and 38 patients had anastomotic leakage. The anastomotic leakage group was found to have higher ratio of hypertension status, open gastrectomy, postoperative length of stay, aorta calcification score and celiac axis calcification, vs the nonanastomotic leakage group. Overall, findings showed that in gastric cancer patients, an independent risk for anastomotic leakage post-gastrectomy was conferred by aorta calcification.
