Anxiety, depression, and regret of donation in living kidney donors
BMC Nephrology Sep 08, 2018
Holscher CM, et al. - Researchers assessed a cohort of living kidney donors (LKDs) using the 2-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale (GAD-2) and the 2-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-2) scale for depression and a single-question survey on regret following donation to get a better understanding of the prevalence and risk factors related with anxiety, depression, and regret in LKDs. They found that in this cohort of 825 LKDs, 5.5% were positive for anxiety, 4.2% were positive for depression, and 2.1% related regret in their decision to donate. No correlation was found between regret and positive screens, but a moderate correlation was found between positive anxiety and depression screens. LKDs with a positive anxiety screen were more likely to express regret. Study findings suggested that psychosocial screening at follow-up might be useful for patients with other psychosocial symptoms, who develop a chronic medical condition following donation, or who lack a social support network.
