Anxiety associated with increased risk for Emergency Department recidivism in patients with low risk chest pain
American Journal of Cardiology Jul 09, 2018
Musey PI, et al. - In a single-center, prospective, observational cohort study of adult emergency department (ED) subjects with low-risk chest pain, researchers assessed the occurrence of abnormal Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale – Anxiety subscale (HADS-A) scores. They also tested the correlation between HADS-A score and subsequent healthcare utilization and recurrence of symptoms. They stratified participants using the HADS-A into a low anxiety (score < 8) group and a high anxiety (score ≥ 8) group. Observations revealed abnormal levels of anxiety in 47% percent of the low-risk chest pain cohort. There was a higher likelihood of these patients having occasional recurrence of their chest pain and they had an increased risk of multiple ED return visits.
