Antiretroviral drug use and HIV drug resistance among MSM and transgender women in sub-Saharan Africa
AIDS Jun 08, 2018
Zhang Y, et al. - Antiretroviral drug use and HIV drug resistance were investigated among HIV-infected MSM and transgender women who were screened for participation in the HIV Prevention Trials Network 075 study. Researchers used a qualitative assay to detect 20 antiretroviral drugs in five drug classes and performed HIV viral load testing using the RealTime HIV-1 Viral Load Assay. Observations indicated that antiretroviral therapy (ART) was not received by most of these HIV-infected persons, and of those who were receiving ART, many demonstrated no viral suppression. Drug-resistant HIV was observed in many of these participants. A necessity for improved HIV care was thus highlighted for African MSM and transgender women.
