Antireflux surgery and risk of lung cancer by histological type in a multinational cohort study
European Journal of Cancer Sep 26, 2020
Yanes M, Santoni G, Maret-Ouda J, et al. - In this population-based cohort study, researchers tested the assupmtion that antireflux surgery decreases the risk of small cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma of the lung differently depending on their location in relation to micro-aspiration. Participants in the study were patients who undergone antireflux surgery during 1980–2014 in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway or Sweden. Of all 812,617 gastroesophageal reflux disease-patients, 46,996 (5.8%) had undergone antireflux surgery. This all-Nordic study shows that patients undergoing antireflux surgery are at a reduced risk of small cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma of the lung, but not of lung adenocarcinoma.
