Antipsychotic use is inversely associated with gastric cancer risk: A nationwide population-based nested case-control study
Cancer Medicine Jun 16, 2019
Hsieh YH, et al. - Researchers used a nested case-control design to evaluate gastric cancer incidence in relation to antipsychotic exposure in a population comprising gastric cancer patients (n=34,470) and nongastric cancer controls (n=163,430) selected from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. Findings revealed an inverse association of antipsychotic use with gastric cancer risk. With individual antipsychotic compounds such as thioridazine, haloperidol, sulpiride, clozapine, olanzapine, quetiapine, amisulpride, and risperidone, dose-dependent trends against gastric cancer risk were also found. In patients with and without peptic ulcer disease, significant dose-dependent impacts of second-generation antipsychotics in attenuating gastric cancer risk were seen in a sensitivity analysis.
