Antipsychotic use and risk of life-threatening medical events: Umbrella review of observational studies
Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica Jul 30, 2019
Papola D, et al. - Researchers performed systematic reviews of observational studies in order to quantify the association of exposure to antipsychotics to the risk of hip fracture, thromboembolism, stroke, myocardial infarction, pneumonia and sudden cardiac death. Reviewing 68 observational studies from six systematic reviews, they identified the most robust association with risk of pneumonia, followed by risk of hip fracture, and thromboembolism. They noted only a weak association for stroke, sudden cardiac death, and myocardial infarction. As the primary studies are of observational nature, bias can’t be ruled out.
