Antiphospholipid syndrome and antiphospholipid antibody profile in patients with retinal vein occlusion
Thrombosis Research Apr 18, 2020
Hernández JL, Sanlés I, Pérez-Montes R, et al. - Researchers assessed the prevalence, link with vascular risk factors, clinical treatment as well as outcome of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) in retinal vein occlusion (RVO). They analyzed cases with a diagnosis of RVO at a tertiary-care hospital, as well as two additional groups, including population-based controls and patients with APS (RVO-APS). They found a greater prevalence of aPLs in RVO-patients vs in controls, as well as no link of APS with any connective-tissue disease in all patients. In the setting of APS, RVO appeared not only associated with atherosclerosis, but also with the “aPL profile”. Findings also revealed the effectiveness of low-dose aspirin in preventing new or recurrent thrombotic events outside the retinal vessels in the majority of RVO-patients with APS. It was suggested that among these patients, RVO could behave as an organ-specific manifestation of APS.
