Antidiabetic treatment patterns and specialty care utilization among patients with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease
Cardiovascular Diabetology Apr 17, 2018
Pantalone KM, et al. - Researchers sought to assess real-world patient characteristics, medication use, and health care utilization patterns among patients with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease (CVD). A cross-sectional analysis was performed of patients with type 2 diabetes with and without established CVD seen at Cleveland Clinic from 2005 to 2016. They used the diabetes complications severity index (DCSI) score to assess comorbidity burden. A higher proportion of patients had a DCSI score ≥3 in the with-CVD cohort (65%) vs without-CVD cohort (10.3%). Overall, specialists and antidiabetic medications which are thought to offer CV benefit in patients with type 2 diabetes and CVD were underutilized.
