Gisev N, Nielsen S, Campbell G, et al. - Researchers investigated 1,166 people prescribed opioids for chronic noncancer pain (CNCP) for the prevalence and characteristics associated with antidepressant use among them. Data were collected at baseline via a self-completed seven-day medication diary and telephone interview to gather knowledge on sociodemographic characteristics and mental/physical health using validated questionnaires. As per the analysis, people with CNCP prescribed opioids commonly use antidepressants. Concurrent use of other psychotropic medicines was more frequent among those using antidepressants, suggesting this population to be at high-risk requiring comprehensive evaluation to optimize outcomes and decrease potential harms from polypharmacy.
