Anticipated HIV stigma among HIV negative men who have sex with men in China: A cross-sectional study
BMC Infectious Diseases Jan 23, 2020
Liu C, Zhang Y, Pan SW, et al. - Given the association of anticipated HIV stigma, ie, the expectation of adverse experiences from one’s seroconversion, with both negative psychological and behavioral outcomes, researchers here sought for its correlates among Chinese men who have sex with men (MSM). Using a gay mobile phone application in China, they recruited 2,006 MSM, who were ≥ 16 years old and self-reported as HIV negative or unknown. The analysis revealed a common encounter to anticipated HIV stigma among Chinese MSM not living with HIV. Higher anticipated HIV stigma was noted in correlation with using social media to seek sexual partners. Lower anticipated HIV stigma was evident in correlation with HIV self-testing and having disclosed one’s sexual orientation to a healthcare provider. Observations highlight the particular necessity for tailored anti-HIV stigma campaigns on social media and suggest the promotion of HIV self-testing as a promising approach.
