Antibiotics for uncomplicated skin abscesses: Systematic review and network meta-analysis

Wang W, et al. - Researchers performed this systematic review to evaluate the effect of adjunctive antibiotic therapy on uncomplicated skin abscesses. Moderate-to-high quality evidence suggested trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) or clindamycin conferred a modest benefit for several important outcomes in patients with uncomplicated skin abscesses, but this was offset by a similar risk of adverse effects. When compared with TMP-SMX, clindamycin had a substantially higher risk of diarrhoea. Cephalosporins were probably not effective.
