Antibiotics for groin hernia repair according to evidence-based guidelines: Time for action in ghana
Journal of Surgical Research Apr 09, 2019
Gyedu A, et al. - The practices of surgeons in Ghana regarding antibiotic use for groin hernia repairs (GHR) were assessed in comparison to evidence-based international guidelines (EBIG). For this purpose, 117 surgeons trained by the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (GCPS) were interviewed; 82 of these reported performing/supervising at least one GHR per week. Analysis indicated no consistent administration of antibiotics for GHR per EBIG by about two-thirds of Ghanaian surgeons interviewed. This emphasizes the necessity for raising improved access to evidence-based medical information overall to guide practice. Researchers suggest providing antibiotic with respect to local surgical site infections rates in GHR, as valuable in Ghana and other LMICs.
