Antibiotic use and outcomes after implementation of the drug resistance in pneumonia score in ED patients with community-onset pneumonia
Chest Jun 14, 2019
Webb BJ, et al. - Via a quasi-experimental, pre-post implementation study on 2,169 adult admissions, the researchers set to determine the rational antibiotic selection in community-onset pneumonia through a previously derived and validated novel prediction tool, the drug-resistance in pneumonia (DRIP) score and its integration into an existing electronic pneumonia clinical decision support tool (ePNa). Statistically non significant average effects for ePNa with DRIP on mortality, length of stay, and cost were observed. Hence, the observers concluded that electronic calculation of the DRIP score was more effective than health-care-associated pneumonia criteria for the guidance of the appropriate broad-spectrum antibiotic use in community-onset pneumonia.
