Antibiotic treatment and outcomes in patients hospitalized for an asthma exacerbation
JAMA Internal Medicine Feb 01, 2019
Stefan MS, et al. - Among patients hospitalized for asthma and treated with corticosteroids, researchers determined the association of antibiotic treatment with outcomes. From January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2016, data were obtained from 19,811 adults in 542 US acute care hospitals who were hospitalized for an asthma exacerbation and treated with systemic corticosteroids. To evaluate the association of antibiotic treatment with results, multivariable adjustment, propensity score matching, propensity weighting, and instrumental variable analysis were used. Findings suggested that antibiotic therapy might be linked to a longer hospital length of stay, higher hospital cost, and similar risk of treatment failure. These outcomes emphasized the need to reduce the inappropriate prescription of antibiotics in patients admitted for asthma.
