Antibiotic prescriptions for children with community-acquired pneumonia: Findings from Italy
The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal Jan 11, 2021
Costenaro P, Cantarutti A, Barbieri E, et al. - Researchers undertook this retrospective cohort analysis to assess the antibiotic prescriptions for Italian children with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), at the primary care level. They analyzed children 3 months–14 years of age suffering from CAP, registered in Pedianet (http://www.pedianet.it) from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2018. They defined antibiotic therapy narrow-spectrum (NS-ABT) if amoxicillin and broad-spectrum (BS-ABT) if amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, cephalosporins or any combination. It was found that an NS-ABT was administered to 16.7% of CAP while BS-ABTs and macrolides were received by 53.3% and 30%, respectively. Within 10 years, experts noted a slight but rising trend of NS-ABT prescription. Being older than 5 years, residing in Central/Southern Italy and being exposed to ABT 3 months before were reported as the factors independently related to decreased odds of receiving an NS-ABT vs BS-ABT including macrolides. According to findings, Italian children suffering from CAP received a very limited prescription of narrow-spectrum antibiotics.
