Anti-müllerian hormone levels among contraceptive users: Evidence from a cross-sectional cohort of 27,125 individuals
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Jun 17, 2021
Hariton E, Shirazi TN, Douglas NC, et al. - Researchers aimed at examining the correlation between different forms of contraceptives and levels of anti-Müllerian hormone, the clinical biomarker-based standard to assess ovarian reserve, in women of reproductive age. In this cross-sectional study, they assessed 27,125 US based women aged 20-46 accessing reproductive hormone results through Modern Fertility who provided informed consent to participate in research. Findings revealed a lower mean anti-Müllerian hormone level in correlation with current hormonal contraceptive use vs not using contraceptives among women, with variability in the percent difference across contraceptive methods. In light of these data, clinicians could interpret anti-Müllerian hormone levels assessed while on contraceptives, and may allow more patients to continue contraceptive use while being evaluated for their ovarian reserve.
