Anogenital warts and relationship to child sexual abuse: Systematic review and meta-analysis
Pediatric Dermatology Jun 04, 2021
Awasthi S, Ornelas J, Armstrong A, et al. - Researchers conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the relationship between anogenital warts (AGW) and sexual abuse in children 12 years of age and younger with respect to wart location, age, and gender. For studies published on or before February 16, 2018, a systematic review of Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science was conducted. Twenty-five studies were involved in a summary synthesis (791 individuals); 10 were involved in the final statistical analysis (199 individuals). The systematic review confirms a significant link between AGW in a child greater than 2 years of age and chances of child sexual abuse (CSA). Genital wart location significantly anticipates CSA as well. HPV typing is not a reliable way to determine CSA. The abuse was most commonly perpetrated by male family members and acquaintances.
