Ankle Brachial Index (ABI) predicts 2-year mortality risk among older adults in the Republic of Congo: The EPIDEMCA-FU study
Atherosclerosis May 23, 2019
Samba H, et al. – Researchers conducted a longitudinal population-based survey (EPIDEMCA-FU) involving Congolese subjects aged ≥ 65 years to evaluate the prognostic value of the Ankle Brachial Index (ABI) in these subjects. They assessed the link between an ABI ≤ 0.90 and mortality by using Cox proportional hazard models, which were adjusted for traditional and cardiovascular risk factors. A total of 1,029 participants were included at baseline, and ABI measurements were recorded for 927. Among these, 17.4% had an ABI ≤ 0.90. Overall, 83 deaths were documented during a 2-year follow-up period. The investigators found that an increased mortality risk among older people was predicted by a low ABI measurement. Thus, older people at high risk of death could be detected via ABI in a simple and non-expensive way.
