Anesthesiologist specialization and use of general anesthesia for cesarean delivery
Anesthesiology Jan 31, 2019
Cobb BT, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study including patients undergoing cesarean delivery for live singleton pregnancies from 2013 through 2017 at one academic medical center, researchers compared utilization of general anesthesia for cesarean delivery among patients treated by generalist vs obstetric-specialized anesthesiologists. They analyzed data from the electronic medical record and assessed the odds of receiving general anesthesia for cesarean delivery in relation to anesthesiologist specialization in obstetric anesthesia. A total of 2,649 of 4,052 (65.4%) cesarean deliveries performed by obstetric-specialized anesthesiologists, and 1,403 of 4,052 (34.6%) by generalists were included. Findings revealed that lower odds of receiving general anesthesia for cesarean delivery were observed in relation to treatment by an obstetric anesthesiologist; however, the persistence of this finding was not evident in a subgroup analysis restricted to evening and weekend deliveries.
