Anesthesia recovery after ophthalmologic surgery at an ambulatory surgical center
Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery Jun 04, 2019
Russell KM, et al. - Researchers reviewed the health records of a retrospective case series of adult patients having ophthalmologic procedures at an ambulatory surgical center at tertiary medical center, Rochester, Minnesota, USA, for anesthesia recovery duration following these procedures. In addition, they sought for information that may enhance postanesthesia recovery unit efficiency. The median recovery duration was 36 minutes among 20,116 procedures. The longest recovery was noted with general anesthesia (79 minutes; IQR, 52 to 104 minutes) and for orbitotomy and strabismus procedures; it was shortest for cataract procedures. Intraoperative fentanyl use, severe postoperative pain, and postoperative opioid requirements were evident in correlation to prolonged recovery.
