Androgen deprivation therapy and depression in men with prostate cancer treated with definitive radiation therapy
Cancer Feb 19, 2019
Deka R, et al. - In a homogeneous group of men who received definitive radiation therapy (RT) for prostate cancer (PC), researchers examined the link between androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) and the development of depression, outpatient psychiatric services, inpatient psychiatric services, and suicide after controlling for multiple sources of selection bias in this retrospective, observational cohort study. Participants included 39,965 veterans with diagnosed PC (per the US Department of Veterans Affairs health care system) who were treated with definitive RT. Depression was newly diagnosed among 934 patients during follow-up. During the same time period, outpatient psychiatric services and inpatient psychiatric services were used by 7,825 patients and 358 patients, respectively, and 54 patients committed suicide. According to findings, ADT was associated with an increase in the risk of depression and the use of outpatient psychiatric services in this patient population.
