Anatomic stabilization techniques provide superior results in terms of functional outcome in patients suffering from chronic ankle instability compared to non-anatomic techniques
Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy Nov 17, 2017
Vuurberg G, et al. - Researchers performed a systematic review to assess the best surgical treatment for patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI) and compared the functional outcomes between various surgical stabilization methods. Compared to tenodesis reconstruction, anatomic reconstruction and anatomic repair seemed to provide better functional outcomes in these patients. The use of tenodesis reconstruction and other non-anatomic surgical techniques were further discouraged in this study. Tenodesis reconstruction, when used as a salvage procedure, provides an increase in functional outcome post-operatively, but its potential value requires further assessment. Anatomic reconstruction seemed to provide the best results, but compared to anatomic repair, seemed more invasive.
