Infection and Drug Resistance Feb 16, 2020

Liu Z, et al. - The incidence trend, demographic and clinical characteristics, treatment and prognosis, epidemiological history and risk factors of human brucellosis were investigated in Huludao, China. Among a total of 1,887 brucellosis patients reported in Huludao, China from January 2014 to December 2018, 1,149 patients (mean age: 49.59± 13.14 years; 75.7% male) provided data via filling the case questionnaires. Observations revealed a reduction in the number of annually reported brucellosis patients from 711 to 187 during the study period; the incidence declined from 27.31/100,000 in 2014 to 7.15/100,000 in 2018. Huludao, China still had a high incidence of human brucellosis, and this is chiefly correlated with contacting with domestic animals and barely taking protective measures. Brucellosis cases most commonly present with following clinical manifestations: fatigue, hyperhidrosis, fever, and arthralgia/myalgia; feeding and grazing were identified to be the most common route of exposure, and sheep/goat was the major species of livestock. Antibiotic therapy was the most commonly adopted treatment option, and most patients responded well to the therapy. Researchers identified the necessity for improving the integrality and accuracy of the notifiable epidemiological case questionnaire in order to provide more factual and objective information for both the physicians and policy-makers.
