Analysis of the associations between obesity indices and left ventricular mass
Cardiology Feb 12, 2019
Feng P, et al. - Researchers assessed the link between various obesity indices and left ventricular mass (LVM) as well as developed interventions for obese hypertensive patients to delay the progression of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). They performed multiple regression analysis in all patients (n = 1,035), the subgroups of patients aged < 65 (n = 713) and ≥65 years (n = 322), and perimenopausal women (n = 319) to assess the link between visceral adiposity index (VAI) and LVM. They found that LVH complications in obese hypertensive patients could be abated by attenuating the VAI rather than the BMI or waist circumference. They noted the possible importance of strict control of blood pressure and obesity for patients aged < 65 years. According to findings, control of blood pressure should be the priority in those aged ≥65 years. For LVH prevention in postmenopausal women, the possible utility of estrogen replacement was suggested.
