Analysis of readmissions following hospitalization for cellulitis in the United States
JAMA Dermatology Mar 03, 2019
Fisher JM, et al. - Via this nationally weighted, retrospective cohort analysis of US hospital admissions, researchers determined the national rate of readmission within 30 days of hospital discharge for cellulitis. They identified 447,080 index admissions with a primary diagnosis of cellulitis. Among these, 9.8% had nonelective readmission within 30 days. More than $500 million was reported for all-cause, nonelective readmissions after cellulitis discharge, and more than $100 million was noted for readmissions for skin and subcutaneous infections. These findings suggested that readmission after hospitalization for cellulitis were commonly encountered, which were costly. These readmissions could be prevented via improved diagnostics, therapeutics, and discharge care coordination.
