Analysis of quality of life after pleurodesis in patients with malignant pleural effusion

Respiration Nov 15, 2019

Terra RM, Costa PB, Dela Vega AJM, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers used a prospectively obtained database to determine quality of life status prior to and following pleurodesis in patients with malignant pleural effusion, as well as to define the factors that could predict quality of life improvement. This study included 183 patients who had pleurodesis from June 2004 to July 2014. The study sample had a mean age of 58.3 ± 12.3 years, and breast cancer was the most numerous primary tumor. They applied the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire prior to and 30 days post-pleurodesis in order to assess the quality of life. Low quality of life scores in patients were demonstrated by baseline results. Following pleurodesis, an improvement was evident in the symptoms as well as the quality of life in patients with malignant pleural effusion. The improvement in quality of life might be hindered by factors such as gender, lymphocyte count, and sclerosing agent.
