Analysis of predictive factors of perforated appendicitis in children
Pediatrics International Jan 23, 2020
Miyauchi H, et al. - Via conducting univariate and multivariate analyses, researchers studied the diagnostic value of objective factors present at admission for identifying predictive markers of perforated appendicitis in children. The sample consisted of 319 children (aged ≤ 15 years) who had treatment for acute appendicitis over a 6-year period from January 2011 to December 2016. According to this retrospective case review, independent and objective factors anticipating perforated appendicitis at admission were longer symptom duration (≥ 2 days), fever (axillary temperature ≥ 38.0°C), elevated C-reactive protein level (≥ 3.46 mg/dL), and the presence of appendiceal fecalith and ascites on imaging. Data reported that 93.3% of patients with all five risk factors had perforated appendicitis. Such risk factors have the potential to be helpful in determining the severity of appendicitis as an ancillary index for practitioners.
