Analysis of oral food challenge outcomes in IgE-mediated food allergies to almond in a large cohort
The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice Oct 21, 2019
Virkud YV, Chen YC, Stieb ES, et al. - Researchers investigated almond oral challenge results, as well as the predictive utility of clinical testing. From Massachusetts General Hospital allergy practices, they evaluated 603 almond challenges done for 590 patients, aged 1 to 66 years. The Niggemann and Beyer allergic reaction grading system and the Sampson 2006 National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases anaphylaxis definition were used to grade reactions. Compared with other allergens, a low proportion of failed almond challenges (5%) was reported, this indicates that it is possible to safely conduct some almond challenges with higher patient-to-staff ratios or potentially introduced at home. Findings revealed usually uncommon and mild reactions, but the possibility of anaphylaxis with high almond sensitization was suggested.
