Analysis of errors made on in utero MR studies of the fetal brain in the MERIDIAN study
European Radiology Dec 15, 2018
Batty R, et al. - Researchers included 40 cases with a confirmed diagnostic error and formed MERIDIAN cohort of 570 foetus to assess the correlation between error rates and types with the previous experience of the reporting radiologists to inform the method of providing a national programme with the best diagnostic accuracy possible and to describe and classify the in utero magnetic resonance (iuMR) errors made in the largest diagnostic accuracy study to date (MERIDIAN). They verified 7·0% error rate for iuMR diagnosing fetal brain abnormalities and an adverse influence on counseling in 55% of error cases. It was observed that more experienced radiologists had lower error rates. Errors could be diminished if collaboration between radiologists, dual reporting, overseeing scan and formal training were focussed.
